From the recording St. Christopher

This is partly a devotional song to one of my favorite musicians, Chris Whitley. I met him at age 19 and ever since he was my inspiration for playing guitar, writing music and for keeping going when the going gets hard.

This is also a response to when the Catholic Church yanked St. Christopher from the official saints roster. He has been restored, Hallelujah, due to the consternation and protest of those who need and believe in him.

I'm not a Catholic, don't believe in God, but for some reason, I do love St. Christopher as a concept and phantom presence to call upon.

Lyrics

11. Saint Christopher

Not by my side
Part of my mind, forever
St. Christopher you’re long gone

No more my saint
Or so they say, to guide my way
St. Christopher you’re long gone

Too many years out on the road
You never got the note from Rome
You’re banished, banished & confused
The believers stopped their prayers
And faithless, faithless we must travel alone
Travel alone
Where do we go from here? Where do we go?

When I was young I loved you best, maybe better
Than acolytes eager to appease you
And so we meet again on our road to perdition
No longer the chosen people

Chasing down the artist’s dream
To bring the people to their knees
In homage, homage
To our of the road where we trip and fall & lose the way
Songs of the road where the destination’s never reached
Songs of the road that we learned
In the desert, from the nomads
Who never ask
Where do we go from here?
Where do we go?
St. Christopher you’re long gone
No more my saint or so they say
To guide the way, guide my way
And keep me safe
You’re banished, you’re banished
But I’m singing your songs of the road where we trip and fall & lose the way
Songs of the road where the destination’s never reached
O, Songs of the road
Where do we go from here…
Where do we go from here…
From here?
